The Georgian government has announced a phased ban on the use of plastic for food packaging.
\nPrime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze stated that, under the new regulations, starting July 1, public catering establishments will no longer be allowed to serve food in plastic containers. From February 1, 2027, the production, import, and sale of food in plastic packaging will also be prohibited.
\nKobakhidze emphasized that the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture has developed a model for plastic reduction that balances public health, environmental protection, and economic interests.
\n\u201cResearch shows that increased plastic use negatively affects the environment and human health, potentially contributing to oncological, reproductive, neurological, and hormonal disorders, among other health issues. Therefore, strong measures are needed. The ministry has proposed a model that allows for a gradual implementation of restrictions, balancing health, environmental, and economic considerations,\u201d Kobakhidze said.
\nThe first steps have already been taken: as of January 1, certain types of single-use plastic tableware are banned from production, import, and sale. The upcoming restrictions aim to further reduce plastic use while exempting certain product categories, as specified in the relevant regulations.
