An electric ship has been launched in the port of the Australian city of Hobart, which its manufacturer calls the largest in the world. This was reported by The Guardian.
According to the source, the length of the Hull 096 vessel, created by Incat, is 130 meters. The design capacity of the ship is 2,100 passengers and 225 vehicles.
It is noted that the vessel will operate only on electricity generated by batteries. The batteries weigh 250 tons and have more than 40 megawatt-hours of installed capacity. The shipbuilding company called this project the most complex and ambitious of all that they have ever undertaken.
Incat said that the energy storage system was connected to eight electric waterjets, and its capacity is four times greater than any previous offshore installation.
“Hull 096 proves that large-scale low-emission transport solutions are not only possible, but ready now,” said Incat CEO Stephen Casey.
The global shipping industry accounts for 3% of the world’s annual emissions, according to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development.
Hull 096 will be heading to South America to carry passengers between Argentina and Uruguay.
