The largest hoard of Viking Age coins in Norway’s history has been discovered in the southern city of René.
According to AZERTAC, over 3,000 silver coins have already been found in a field near the Glomma River, and archaeologists are continuing their excavations.
Private individuals using metal detectors in early April made the first finds. The coins are scattered over a large area and presumably surfaced after tillage.
Experts estimate the hoard was buried in the 11th century, around 1040-1050. Most of the coins originate from England and Germany, but among them are Norwegian specimens from the time of King Harald Hardrada.
This is the first such large find of its kind in nearly 200 years.
