Patricia Johnston of the Akhal-Teke Foundation presented the results of a large-scale study conducted in 2026, covering the purebred Akhal-Teke population in North America. Experts were able to create an up-to-date demographic database that reflects the actual breeding stock, population structure, and volumes of cryopreserved material, according to the country’s International Research Center.
An analysis revealed that the total population of purebred Akhal-Teke horses in North America is approximately 350 individuals. However, the foal birth rate remains below the replacement level, highlighting the particular importance of protecting the unique gene pool of these “heavenly” horses, whose historical homeland is Turkmenistan.
To address these challenges, a dedicated breeding conservation strategy (ATF-CBF) was adopted. This new initiative combined classical pedigree analysis with cutting-edge genomic technologies, such as dense SNP genotyping. The study’s authors note that the key to the successful preservation and development of this legendary breed lies in the close international partnership of horse breeders, scientists, and relevant organizations from around the world.
