The Turkmenistan national team demonstrated impressive results at the 6th World Nomad Games held in Kyrgyzstan, significantly improving on their performance in previous years. In the competition, which brought together 3000 athletes from 106 countries, the team of 14 Turkmen athletes and seven coaches won 11 medals of various denominations: two gold, three silver, and six bronze. The team placed a respectable seventh in the overall team standings, as reported by turkmenistan.gov.tm.
Wrestlers from Turkmenistan secured the national team’s main success. Annagurban Allaberdiyev won the team’s first gold medal, emerging victorious in the super-heavyweight category of Turkmen national wrestling, goresh. Turkmen athletes also won a second gold medal and three more silver medals in the Kyrgyz wrestling alysh: Nurmuhammet Baidogdyev won the top prize, while Abdyresul Durdyev, Silapberdi Nuryev, and Mekan Nurberdiyev took silver.
Six bronze medals in a wide variety of national martial arts were added to the list of awards. Palvan Gurbangeldiev excelled in traditional South Korean wrestling ssireum, Atageldi Tejendurdyev took the podium in Kyrgyz kurosh, Ylkham Kemalov took third in Uzbek kurash, Begli Khodzhammayev in Tajik gushtini milli kamarbandi, Serdar Babamyradov in Kazakh kuresy, and Ziyamukhammet Saparov won bronze in Azerbaijani guresh.
This result demonstrated the remarkable progress of Turkmen ethnosports – by comparison, at the previous Games in Astana, athletes won four medals. In total, Turkmenistan has won 96 medals since the Games began. The Games, which concluded in Cholpon-Ata, passed the baton to the next forum: the 7th World Nomad Games will be held in Kazan in 2028.
