On September 16, as part of the observance of World Ozone Day, educational and awareness-raising events were held for schoolchildren, aimed at increasing the environmental literacy of the younger generation and fostering a responsible attitude toward the environment.
The events focused primarily on preserving the ozone layer, its role in protecting life on Earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation, and the importance of environmentally responsible behavior in daily life. Participants formed teams of ten, presenting their names, slogans, and captains, before taking part in several educational stages.
The first stage was a “Question and Answer” session. Schoolchildren demonstrated their knowledge regarding the significance of the ozone layer, the causes of its depletion, ozone-depleting substances, and household appliances that may use relevant refrigerants. The competitive format not only tested the students’ knowledge but also made learning about environmental issues more engaging.
During the second stage—a practical game titled “Eco-Logistics”—participants were asked to identify goods and common household items that could harm the environment and to select more eco-friendly alternatives. The students discussed their choices and explained why specific options were safer for the environment.
The third stage was the “Captains’ Contest.” Team captains were given environmental scenarios and a limited time to prepare appeals addressed to the general public, young people, or business representatives. Evaluations were based on the persuasiveness of the presentation, emotional expressiveness, and the accuracy of the environmental information provided.
Visual materials illustrating ozone layer depletion and the effects of ultraviolet radiation were also displayed during the event. The interactive format engaged the schoolchildren in discussions about environmental issues and demonstrated that contributing to environmental protection can begin with simple, conscious decisions made by each individual. Such events foster an environmental mindset among young people, raise awareness of global environmental issues, and promote an understanding of the importance of international and national efforts to protect the ozone layer.
World Ozone Day serves as a reminder that preserving a healthy environment and protecting our planet require the collective efforts of governments, the international community, and every individual.
