Shitsui Hakoishi, 108, from Japan, was officially recognised by Guinness World Records as the world’s oldest surviving barber. Her incredible accomplishment is a testament to her commitment to the profession for all her years, and she has made sure that she will be continuing her plans to still work as a barber at 110.
Hakoishi’s tale is one of determination and dedication to her craft, showing that age does not affect achieving one’s dreams and pursuing an active, productive life.
Hakoishi was born on November 10, 1916, to a family of farmers in Nakagawa and at the age of 14 years, Hakoishi decided to become a barber. Her friend’s mother offered her the chance to be an apprentice at a Tokyo hair salon. It was there that Hakoishi came to the conclusion to become a barber, and it was there that she began her career.
Although, she saw lots of varied situations Hakoishi is still active in her line of work at 108 years old. She still uses her own scissors and serves clients with pride, and some of her long-time clients still go to see her for services. Even though she lives in a care home today, she is still independent and can look after herself.
