Iraqi President Nizar Amidi officially appointed Ali al-Zaidi as the country’s new Prime Minister on April 28, instructing him to form a new government within 30 days. This was reported by the Iraqi INA news agency.
Ali al-Zaidi, nominated by the largest parliamentary bloc – the Coordination Council, a coalition of Shiite parties, is a person with extensive experience in the financial, scientific and media sectors. Previously, in January of this year, former Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki was proposed for this position, but this step caused mixed reactions in the international community. According to the power-sharing system in force in the country since 2003, the post of President is appointed by a Kurd, the speaker of parliament is appointed by a Sunni, and the post of Prime Minister is appointed by a Shiite. The newly appointed Prime Minister currently heads the board of directors of the National Holding Company.
