The American aerospace agency NASA plans to actively utilize unmanned aerial vehicles and artificial intelligence technologies in the creation of a lunar base. Carlos García Galán, head of NASA’s lunar base program, as reported by the Armenpress.
“Artificial intelligence is one of the main areas. If you imagine what an unmanned aerial vehicle should do—survey an area and find suitable landing sites—AI can significantly assist in this,” García Galán said.
According to a NASA spokesperson, the agency is currently in the initial stages of the lunar base construction project, so there are still trials and errors to be made.
“We’re still early in the process, so we’re currently focused on building the systems,” he added.
In March, the American space agency announced the beginning of a phased effort to establish a permanent base on the moon. NASA plans to build the base in three stages. First, it needs to provide transportation to the moon and create the basic energy, scientific, and communications infrastructure.
The second stage is planned to create a semblance of habitable infrastructure and logistics similar to those found on Earth, using developments from foreign space agencies. The final stage is expected to enable long-term human presence on the Moon.
