Neil Armstrong’s 18-karat gold Omega Speedmaster Professional chronograph has made history once again, selling for a staggering $2.2 million at auction on April 17, 2025. The sale by RR Auction in Boston sets a new record for the highest price ever paid for an astronaut’s timepiece.

The legendary watch, part of Omega’s “Tribute to Astronauts” series, was given to Neil Armstrong four months after his moon landing. It symbolizes a monumental achievement in history, according to his son, Mark Armstrong.

Numbered “17” in the series, the watch features a burgundy aluminum bezel, gold dial, and an engraved caseback highlighting Armstrong’s missions. Signs of use, including scuffs and scratches, confirm its authenticity, as he wore it while teaching at the University of Cincinnati.

The recent auction price reached $850,000, with half going to charities meaningful to Armstrong, while the seller donates to the Brian LaViolette Scholarship Foundation. This sale makes it the most expensive Omega Speedmaster and the third highest-priced space artifact ever sold, reflecting the lasting legacy of lunar exploration.
