Over the past decade, the number of foreigners has increased in most municipalities in Japan. According to the Immigration Services Agency, as of the end of June, the country was home to a record-high number of foreign nationals – over 3.95 million.
The number of foreigners increased in 1680 municipalities, or approximately 96% of the total. In 51% of these municipalities, the number of new arrivals more than doubled. Foreign nationals settled primarily in large cities. Osaka has 72 000 registered foreigners, Yokohama has approximately 48 000, and Nagoya has approximately 35 000.
Municipalities have called on the government to take additional measures to assist foreigners who have moved to Japan.
