The Dutch capital Amsterdam will restrict the number of large cruise ships entering the city’s port in an attempt to prevent too many tourists from arriving at the same time. City leaders plan to achieve this goal by 2035. Earlier, a plan to relocate the passenger terminal near Amsterdam Central Station and the bus terminal was also canceled. The proposal to gradually reduce the number of cruise ships entering the city is aimed at improving the air quality in the city center, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and preventing excessive tourist arrivals.
The final decision on whether to restrict large cruise ships will be made after local elections in March.
Amsterdam is about an hour’s drive from Rotterdam, Europe’s largest port.
