Birth rate of the France in 2025 fall to its lowest level since 1944.
According to the French National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE), 654000 children were born in 2025, which is 2.1% fewer than in 2024 and 24% fewer than in 2010, when the birth rate was at its highest.
The fertility rate continues to decline: from 1.61 in 2024, it was 1.56 children per woman in 2025. This is the lowest level since the end of World War I, the report states.
INSEE notes that the number of deaths exceeded the number of births in 2025 and amounted to 651000, which is 1.5% more than in 2024. According to the report’s authors, the increase in mortality is related to the winter flu epidemic, especially in early 2025.
Nevertheless, the republic’s total population has increased to 69.1 million, up from 68.6 million in 2024. Life expectancy is 85.9 years for women and 80.3 years for men.
