China plans to complete construction of an experimental fusion reactor, known as an “artificial sun”, by 2027. As announced by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning on the social media platform X.
According to Mao Ning, this facility could be the world’s first capable of generating electricity. This developed at the Institute of Plasma Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The reactor is being built in Hefei, Anhui Province.
The 400-ton facility operates like a giant thermos. Its superconducting magnets are cooled to minus 269 degrees Celsius to contain the plasma, which consists of deuterium and tritium.
