Danmarks Nationalbank introduced new coins dedicated to the current monarch, King Frederik. It started yesterday on 7 December.
These are the first changes to the design of Danish coins in 36 years.
The new 20- and 10-krone coins feature a portrait of the king created by artist Eva Hjort. The reverse features the shield and crown of the royal coat of arms. The coat of arms with three lions is now depicted alongside the symbols of the Faroe Islands, Greenland, and Schleswig (a historical region in northern Europe, formerly a duchy), in keeping with the updated royal coat of arms.
The 5-, 2-, and 1-krone coins feature the king’s monogram on the obverse and a new symbol on the reverse. The 50-øre coin retains its original design, omitting symbols associated with the monarch.
“The coins are designed with respect for history and with modern times in mind. The new design features many details and symbols. “Some are based on the old traditions of Danish coinage, while others are new,” said National Bank Director Christian Kettel Thomsen.
The new coins continue the existing series and retain the same size, shape, and materials.
