Following an official ceremony at the 47th ASEAN Summit on Sunday, Timor-Leste was welcomed as the regional organization’s 11th member.
Timor-Leste President José Ramos-Horta and Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao attended the signing ceremony of the ASEAN Declaration of Accession.
Timor-Leste applied for ASEAN membership in 2011. In November 2022, ASEAN member states largely agreed to admit the country as the newest member of the regional organization.
The 47th ASEAN Summit and associated summits are hosted by Malaysia, the 2025 ASEAN Chair, and will run from Sunday to Tuesday.
ASEAN was founded in 1967 and comprises Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, and Timor-Leste.
