Ashgabat Celebrates the 12th International Day of Yoga

The 12th International Day of Yoga was celebrated in Ashgabat under the theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing.” The vibrant event brought together a diverse audience, including the Deputy Minister of Healthcare and Medical Industry of Turkmenistan, Azat Ovezov, alongside representatives of the diplomatic corps, members of the Indian community, and local yoga enthusiasts.
In his welcoming remarks, Ambassador Bandaru Wilsonbabu spoke about the ancient origins of Yoga in India. He highlighted how the UN adopted June 21 as the International Day of Yoga in 2014, following an initiative by the Prime Minister of India, H.E. Narendra Modi. The Ambassador emphasized the significant benefits of yoga for healthy aging, as well as its capacity to bring peace and harmony to today’s turbulent world.
Representing the Government of Turkmenistan, Deputy Minister Azat Ovezov pointed out the vital role yoga plays in strengthening physical and emotional well-being and preventing lifestyle-related diseases. Recalling the historic inauguration of the “Yoga and Traditional Medicine Centre” in Ashgabat during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official visit in July 2015, Azat Ovezov reiterated Turkmenistan’s ongoing support for promoting yoga across the country.
The celebration symbolized the long-standing bonds of friendship and deep cooperation between India and Turkmenistan. In line with its “Extended Neighbourhood” policy and the ancient Indian philosophy of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” (The World is One Family), India stands ready to share its development experience and expertise according to the needs and priorities of Turkmenistan.
