As a result of the vote held at the United Nations General Assembly on June 3, the Kyrgyz Republic was elected for the first time in its history to a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the period 2027-2028. Over several rounds of voting, Kyrgyzstan managed to beat its main rival, the Republic of the Philippines, and receive the support of 142 countries, the required two-thirds majority of the General Assembly member states.

Addressing the nation on the historic achievement, President of the Kyrgyz Republic Sadyr Zhaparov emphasized that this event is a testament to the country’s high international prestige and will open a new page in the history of the United Nations. According to official data, starting from January 1, 2027, along with Kyrgyzstan, the Republics of Austria, Zimbabwe, Portugal and Trinidad and Tobago will also take up their duties as non-permanent members of the Security Council. The newly elected countries will replace Greece, Denmark, Pakistan, Panama and Somalia, whose terms of office expire on December 31, 2026.
