More than 1 million undocumented migrants living in Spain have applied to live in the country. The government had previously issued a decree to grant formal permits to foreigners in order to provide them with the necessary documents and ensure their full integration into society. Migrants were given a period from April 15 to July 1 to obtain the relevant documents. During this period, twice as many people applied for documents as expected.
According to the decree, as of January 1 of this year, all migrants who had previously visited Spain, had resided continuously for at least 5 months, had not committed any criminal offenses, and did not pose a threat to public order were allowed to apply to live and work.
According to official figures, the number of foreigners living in Spain has doubled since 2002. Currently, migrants make up one fifth of the country’s population.
