The 81st session of the UN General Assembly will open on September 8 at 3:00 PM local time at United Nations Headquarters in New York under the presidency of the new session president, Khalilur Rahman, the UN announced. UN Secretary-General António Guterres and Khalilur Rahman will address the opening ceremony. The 81st session of the UN General Assembly will once again convene world leaders to catalyze global cooperation, significantly advance the Sustainable Development Goals, and promote joint action for peace, dignity, and equality on a healthy planet. The High-Level Week will run from September 22 to 29.
On September 22, as part of the High-Level Week, heads of state and government will address the general debate. More than 100 heads of state and 46 heads of government, as well as ministers and ambassadors, are expected to participate, with the presence of large delegations. In addition to the general debate, the Assembly will hold a number of high-level meetings. These include a session dedicated to the 40th anniversary of the Declaration on the Right to Development, sessions on climate action and just transition, as well as on the existential threats posed by rising sea levels, a session on pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response, and a discussion on the 25th anniversary of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action. A high-level plenary session will also be held to commemorate the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons.
