Six candidates presented their programs and answered questions about UN reform, the budget crisis, and international conflicts.
An open debate for candidates for the post of Secretary-General of the organization, which will become vacant after António Guterres’ term ends at the end of this year, was held at UN Headquarters.
The six candidates participated in a discussion program titled “Open Debate on the Election of the UN Secretary-General: The Next Secretary-General.”
During the open session in the UN General Assembly Hall, the candidates answered questions from moderators and participants regarding the organization’s budget crisis, UN system reform, and international conflicts and crises.
The candidates for the post of UN Secretary-General include IAEA Director-General Rafael Grossi, former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet, former President of Senegal Macky Sall, Secretary-General of the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Rebeca Grynspan, President of the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly (2018–2019) Maria Fernanda Espinosa, and Permanent Representative of Guyana to the UN Caroline Rodriguez-Birkett.
António Guterres has served two consecutive five-year terms as UN Secretary-General. His term expires on December 31 of this year.
