The US State Department announced it is preparing to issue a limited number of special passports in honor of the country’s 250th anniversary. For the first time, these documents will feature the image of a sitting president. Donald Trump will be the first American leader to have his face appear on a document while still alive, The Associated Press reported.
The idea for the special passport was discussed for several months and was approved on the evening of April 27. The print run will be between 25000 and 30 000 copies. These passports will be available to applicants who apply in person at the Washington, D.C., passport office starting July 4. Those wishing to apply for a standard passport will be able to do so online or at other offices.
State Department representative Tommy Pigott stated that the series will have a unique design while retaining all standard security features. The inside of the passport will feature a portrait of the president above a gold signature, and the country’s name and the word “Passport” will be printed in large gold letters on the cover. The back will feature a gold-laminated image of the American flag and the number 250.
As the Associated Press notes, modern American passports already feature images of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln, as well as iconic landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty, the Liberty Bell, and Independence Hall. In March, the US Treasury Department announced plans to include Donald Trump’s signature on dollar bills in honor of the 250th anniversary of US independence.
