Turkmen tennis players are starting the Davis Cup zonal tournament, which is taking place in Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka, as reported by the turkmenistan.gov.tm.
Seven national teams have joined the qualifying round of Group IV of the Asia-Oceania Zone. Following the draw, Turkmenistan was placed in Group B, where they will play against Kuwait, Iraq, and Kyrgyzstan. Group A includes Qatar, Sri Lanka, and the Northern Mariana Islands. In their opening match, the Turkmen athletes will face Kuwait.
The top two teams from each group will advance to the playoffs, where they will compete for two spots in Group III of the Asia-Oceania Zone for next year. The third-place teams will play in a playoff for the right to remain in Group IV. The losing team, as well as the outsider from Group B, will be relegated to Group V.
Yuri Rogusskiy, Selim Chagylov, Ali Geldiyev, and Resul Atayev represent the country at the tournament. The team captain is Meilis Orazmuhammedov, the head coach is Mirali Gasanov, and the fitness coach is Samir Agabek.
The Turkmenistan national team has been participating in the Davis Cup since 2004. The athletes earned a spot in Group IV last year at the tournament in Bahrain, where they convincingly defeated teams from Brunei, Bangladesh, Bahrain, and Guam.
