Turkmenistan was elected Chair of the Group of Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs) for 2027–2028, with the term beginning on January 1, 2027. The decision was made with the unanimous support of all members of the Group, at the level of Permanent Representatives to the UN, as reported by un.mission.gov.tm.
Azerbaijan (Vice-Chair), Laos, Burundi, Chad, Rwanda and Paraguay were also elected to the Bureau from the regional groups.
The Chairmanship will enable Turkmenistan to coordinate the Group’s activities for two years, including in priority areas for the country such as energy and transport connectivity, representing the collective interests of 32 landlocked developing countries, and to play a leading role in the practical implementation of the Avaza Action Programme for 2024–2034.
The composition of the Group’s Governing Bureau will also be approved by the Final Declaration of the upcoming LLDCs Ministerial Meeting, scheduled for 24 September 2026 at UN Headquarters in New York.
In November–December of this year, in order to systematically prepare for the performance of the functions of the Chairmanship, a draft Roadmap for Turkmenistan’s Chairmanship of the Group for 2027–2028 will be prepared jointly with the Office of the High Representative of the United Nations (OHRLLS), outlining the main priorities, initiatives, and practical activities for the coming period.
