Equatorial Guinea’s capital has been moved from its island to the mainland in an effort to enhance security and improve logistics. President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo signed a decree declaring Ciudad de la Paz the new capital of the republic, stripping Malabo of that status.
“We have decided to move the seat of government to Ciudad de la Paz to guarantee the security of government institutions and ensure the harmonious development of all regions of our country,” Guinea Ecuatorial Press quotes from the decree. “Malabo, due to its island location, remains vulnerable to external threats, while the new capital in the heart of the mainland will become a fortress of sovereignty and an engine of progress for every citizen of Equatorial Guinea.”
