Zohran Mamdani, a South Asian Muslim candidate, has officially won the primary election for mayor of New York City, the Democratic stronghold of the United States. If 33 year old Mamdani wins the November 4 election, he will become New York City’s first Muslim mayor. According to the results of the Democratic Party primary, Mamdani won 56 percent of the vote, beating his opponent, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.
Speaking after the results were announced, Mamdani thanked voters for their support.
A total of 11 people participated in the primary election among the Democratic Party candidates for mayor of the city in the November election. The Republicans, however, did not hold a primary election because they had only one candidate.
