German Chancellor Friedrich Merz was re-elected as party chairman at the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party convention in Stuttgart. He received 91.17 percent of the vote,
Deursche Welle reports. Of the 1,001 registered delegates, 977 voted in favor of Merz, with 878 voting for and 85 against. Fourteen delegates abstained, and their ballots were invalidated in accordance with established CDU procedures. Thus, the re-elected CDU leader’s level of support among his fellow party members remains consistently high: at the previous convention in May 2024, he received approximately 90 percent of the vote. Merz assumed the post of CDU chairman for the first time in 2022 during a party convention held online due to the coronavirus pandemic. Friedrich Merz has been the head of the German government since May 6, 2025. He is the 10th Federal Chancellor.
