When it’s scorching outside and the thermometer is creeping up, making your home an oasis of coolness is a real challenge. Here are proven methods that will help you enjoy comfort even in the hottest weather:
Proper use of an air conditioner
Set a comfortable temperature: Optimally 22-25°C. Don’t make it too cold, otherwise the temperature difference when you go outside will be too sharp. Direct the air upward: Avoid direct air flow towards yourself, so as not to catch a cold. Clean the filters regularly: This is critically important! Dirty filters not only reduce efficiency, but also spread dust and bacteria. Clean them every 2-4 weeks. Maintain humidity: Air conditioning dries the air. Use a humidifier or place a container of water to avoid dry mucous membranes. Ventilate: Turn off the air conditioner and open the windows for 10-15 minutes at least once a day to let in fresh air.
Protection from the sun and heat
Close curtains and blinds, especially in rooms that receive direct sunlight. Thick curtains, blackout blinds, or Venetian blinds can reduce the temperature by a few degrees. Light-colored external blinds or shutters are even more effective. Use reflective films: Special sunscreen or tinting films can be applied to windows that reflect the sun’s rays. Ventilate at night: If the nights are relatively cool, open the windows at night to let in fresh air and cool the house. In the morning, close everything before the sun starts to beat down.
Reducing heat sources
Minimize oven and stove use: In the summer, it is better to cook food that does not require long cooking on the stove or in the oven. Use a microwave, slow cooker, grill outside (if available), or prepare salads. Turn off unnecessary appliances: TVs, computers, chargers – all of these emit heat. Unplug them when not in use. Use LED lighting: Incandescent bulbs get very hot. Switching to LED bulbs will not only save energy but also reduce heat generation.
Ventilation and air circulation
Use fans: Floor, table, or ceiling fans create a cool feeling by moving air, helping to evaporate sweat from the skin. Create a draft (controlled): Open windows on opposite sides of the house or room to create a flow of air. Do this during cool hours to keep out hot air.
Additional Tricks
Cool drinks and showers: Drink more water, tea, compotes. A cool shower several times a day will help lower your body temperature. Wet towels: Hang wet towels or sheets near open windows or in front of a fan – the evaporation of water will help cool the air a little. Plants: Houseplants, especially large ones, can lower the temperature a little and improve the air quality.
By following these tips, you can significantly increase the comfort in your home even on the hottest days!
