According to preliminary results of the presidential election in Costa Rica, Laura Fernandez, the candidate of the ruling “Sovereign People” party, won with 50.8% of the vote. According to the data provided by the Supreme Electoral Commission, Fernandez is leading with a clear result. Her closest rival, the candidate of the National Liberation Party, Alvaro Ramos, is in second place with 31.6% of the vote.
According to Costa Rican law, a candidate must receive at least 40% of the vote to win in the first round of the election. If the current dynamics continue, this will allow Fernandez to win without a second round of the election.
A total of nine candidates participated in the presidential election. During the pre-election campaign, the fight against illegal drug trafficking, the worsening security situation and the rising cost of living were the main topics of public debate. Fernandez, 39, promised during the election campaign that she would continue the policies of the current President. Fernandes, the political heir to current President Rodrigo Chavez, has focused his campaign on continuing the current economic course and attracting foreign investment to the country.
