A new world record was set at Heritage Auction: a rare basketball card signed by Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant was sold for 12.9 million dollars. The lot became the most expensive not only in the history of basketball, but also in all of sports collecting, as reported by The Athletic.
A group of investors purchased the card. Among them are collector Matthew Allen, known online under the nickname Shyne150, Canadian executive Kevin O’Leary, and Miami entrepreneur Paul Warshaw.
According to O’Leary, his interest in sports collectibles was developed thanks to Warshaw, who has long been involved in this hobby with Allen. O’Leary himself views such purchases as investments comparable to cryptocurrency, gold, or works of art. “I don’t see any difference with other assets. But this is much more exciting because the social circle here is incredible,” the investor noted in an interview with CNBC.
