For the first time in 30 years, a new large diamond deposit has been discovered in Angola. This was reported by the De Beers group, which discovered it jointly with the Angolan state company Endiama.
According to the press release, the deposit is located in the province of Lunda Sur. “The new kimberlite deposit has become the largest of those discovered by De Beers in the last 30 years,” the group said in a communique. According to incoming information, this may be a new diamond-bearing province.
The deposit was discovered through the analysis of data obtained using aerial photography. Subsequent drilling operations confirmed the presence of diamonds. De Beers has not yet provided estimates of reserves; the work is ongoing. Experts believe that not one large diamond deposit has been discovered, but several located close to each other.
In the spring of 2022, the Angolan government signed an investment agreement with De Beers to explore and mine diamonds in the northeast of the African country. It was expanded and clarified in February 2024.
Angola is Africa’s second-largest diamond producer after Botswana.
