French Polynesia has announced that it will create the world’s largest marine reserve. The reserve will cover 4.8 million square kilometers, an economic zone the size of the entire European Union. The new reserve is intended to serve as a haven for marine life. The archipelago’s residents have supported the idea – for them, it is not only an environmental policy, but also a way to preserve cultural heritage.
