A signed passport photo of Marilyn Monroe has sold at auction for more than 21 000 dollars, as reported by the New York Post. The photo was taken in 1954, a few weeks after the American actress’s wedding to baseball player Joe DiMaggio.
The couple was planning a trip to Japan for their honeymoon, but 27-year-old Monroe, born Norma Jeane Mortenson, did not have the necessary photo for the documents. DiMaggio improvised: he went to the nearest arcade with a photo of the star of the film Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and made several copies. The vintage photo, measuring 5.7 x 6.9 centimeters, that went under the hammer was not included in Monroe’s passport. It contains her autograph, which she left for the passport officer: “To Mr. Bolds, thank you and my warmest wishes, Marilyn Monroe DiMaggio.”
Nine months after their wedding, Marilyn and Joe DiMaggio divorced. The baseball player became the second of the movie star’s three husbands.
