The global car market shows positive dynamics both in June and in the first half of 2025.
In the first month of summer, 7,731,358 new passenger cars and light commercial vehicles were sold worldwide, which is 2.1% more than in June 2024, Just Auto reports, citing data from the consulting company GlobalData. At the end of the first half of the year, the car market is also in the black: sales amounted to 44,473,945 cars, which corresponds to an increase of 4.9% compared to the first half of last year.
China retained its title of the world leader in car sales in June: 2,311,310 cars were sold there, which is 12.6% more than in the same month last year. The US market ended the first month of summer with 1,264,024 cars (down 4.3%), while 1,260,867 new cars were sold in Western Europe (down 6.8%) and 384,590 in Eastern Europe (down 9.9%).
South America saw an 8.6% increase in sales, with 251,741 cars sold. Other markets included Japan with 391,668 cars (up 5.8%), Canada with 174,357 (up 3.6%) and South Korea with 143,507 (up 6.1%). According to
Avtostat data on sales in Russia in June, Russians bought 90,116 new cars. This is 2% less than in May and 27.6% worse than the same period last year. If we consider the first half of the year, the volume of the Russian car market amounted to 530,375 new passenger cars – 26.3% less than in January-June 2024.
The Ministry of Industry and Trade provides statistics that include only passenger cars excluding light commercial vehicles: 89,599 units in June (minus 27% compared to June 2024). Against this background, the Automobile Manufacturers Committee of the Association of European Businesses worsened its forecast in Russia for 2025 from 1.4 million passenger cars and light commercial vehicles to 1.25 million units. That is, a 24% drop in the market is expected.
