Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi announced on Monday that she has decided to dissolve the House of Representatives (the lower house of parliament) on January 23 to hold a snap general election scheduled for February 8.
At a press conference, Takaichi announced that she would dissolve the lower house on Friday, the opening day of this year’s regular parliamentary session.
The vote will take place on February 8, and the official election campaign will begin on January 27.
