Former Secretary General of the Socialist Party of Portugal António José Seguro is leading in the second round of the presidential election. This was reported by the TASS agency, citing preliminary data from the Ministry of the Interior, after more than 70% of the votes were counted.
The former Secretary General of the Socialist Party received 63% of the votes. His opponent, the leader of the far-right “Stop!” (“Chega!”) party, André Ventura, received 36% of the votes. The
63-year-old Seguro is a politician with many years of experience, but in recent years he has been engaged in teaching. He was born in 1962 in the small town of Penamacor, near the Spanish border, and studied international relations. He has been actively involved in politics since his youth and has always been in contact with the Socialist Party. Seguro worked in the administration of the current UN Secretary General António Guterres and had the opportunity to work as a member of the European Parliament. He was Secretary General of the Socialist Party from 2011 to 2014. Seguro left this post after internal party elections. The election was won by António Costa, then mayor of Lisbon, later Prime Minister of Portugal, and later President of the European Council.
