Senegal intends to join BRICS and is holding talks with members of this association. This statement was made by the country’s Foreign Minister Yassine Fall. As reported TACC.
“Senegal is one of the countries that liked the creation of BRICS and is negotiating with this group of countries to become part of it,” the Seneplus portal quotes her as saying.
According to the minister, Senegal can play a positive role in this association. “Senegal can contribute to BRICS thanks to its stability, resources and desire to develop industry,” she added, stressing that the BRICS format provides “more space for exchanging opinions and access to commercial resources.”
The BRICS group has gone through two waves of expansion since its founding in 2006. In 2011, South Africa joined the original group of Brazil, Russia, India and China. In August 2023, six new members were invited to join, including Argentina, but it withdrew in late December. Five new members – Egypt, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Ethiopia – began full-fledged work in BRICS on January 1, 2024.
Brazil assumed the BRICS chairmanship on January 1, 2025. In 2024, Russia held the chairmanship; a key event during its presidency was the summit in Kazan from October 22-24, where the creation of a category of partner states was decided. The initial partner states were Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan. Although Indonesia was initially named a BRICS partner, Brazilian authorities announced on January 6th that the country had become a full member of the community. On January 17th, the Brazilian Foreign Ministry announced that Nigeria had joined BRICS as a partner.
