Kenyan environmental activist Trupena Muthoni has set a new Guinness World Record by hugging a tree trunk for 72 hours.
The new record beats the previous record of 50 hours, 2 minutes, and 28 seconds set by 22-year-old Ghanaian activist Frederic Boakye.
Muthoni previously held a similar record: in February 2025, he spent 48 hours in contact with a tree. He says that while the first attempt was a symbolic gesture reminding people of their connection to nature, the second is a powerful statement about the need for sustained and long-term climate action.
“The world needs not just symbols, but real evidence that shows the sustainability, determination and ongoing commitment to protecting nature,” Muthoni said.
