On March 19, Thai Prime Minister Anutin Chanwirakul was re-elected for a second term after a landslide victory in parliamentary elections. Reuters reported that
Chanwirakul had secured the support of a majority of MPs, allowing him to retain his post and secure a new mandate to govern the country. The Prime Minister said he was ready to immediately form a Cabinet and focus on solving key tasks. He listed strengthening the economy and improving the living standards of the population as priorities.
Experts say the government he led could bring a period of relative stability to Thailand after a long period of political instability.
In December, King Maha Vajiralongkorn (Rama X) of Thailand granted Prime Minister Anutin Chanwirakul permission to dissolve parliament and hold general elections in early 2026. Elections to the House of Representatives were to be held 45-60 days after the royal decree was issued. During this time, the Prime Minister was to head a caretaker government with limited powers. Anutin Chanwirakul won the parliamentary elections in September with the support of the People’s Party; In return, he promised to dissolve parliament within four months and hold a referendum on the drafting of a new constitution by an elected constituent assembly.
