The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has officially won a landslide victory in the elections, securing a majority of seats in parliament.
According to the final vote count, the BNP and its allies won 212 of the 299 seats in parliament. The Islamic Union (Jamaat-e-Islami) won 77 seats.
BNP leader Tariq Rahman is expected to be sworn in as prime minister.
It was previously reported that more than 2000 candidates and approximately 50 parties competed for the 300 seats in the current unicameral parliament. A referendum on political reforms was held alongside the elections. These reforms include the creation of an upper house of parliament. The majority of voters who took part in the referendum supported the proposed reforms, particularly the formation of an upper house of parliament.
