International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director Rafael Grossi intends to run for the post of UN Secretary-General. He announced this in an interview with the French news agency AFP on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, as reported by the TASS.
Grossi stated that his experience as head of the IAEA will help him succeed as UN Secretary-General. He said he will strive to engage in dialogue “with everyone” and “be an acceptable mediator for all.”
The UN Secretary-General is appointed by the General Assembly on the recommendation of the Security Council, which pre-selects candidates and can veto any proposed candidate. Technically, there is no limit on the number of five-year terms a Secretary-General can serve, but no one has previously held the post for more than two terms. The current, ninth head of the organization is António Guterres. He assumed his duties on January 1, 2017.
