One of the stages of the prestigious Grand Prix tournament series, organized by the Chess Federation of Turkmenistan, was successfully held in the city of Turkmenabad from August 22 to 28. The competition brought together 166 participants: 100 in the open category and 66 in the women’s category.
The tournament, which was held according to the Swiss system in 9 rounds, was of great importance for the participants, since all the games played counted towards the international rating. The time control was as follows: 90 minutes per game with an increment of 30 seconds for each move.
The tournament attracted special attention because it was dedicated to the memory of the Honored Trainer of Turkmenistan Shakir Khakimov, who made a huge contribution to the development of chess in the Lebap velayat. His students and followers continue to develop the chess school of the region, preserving the legacy of their mentor.
Based on the results of the intense struggle, the winners and prizewinners were determined.
In the women’s category, Gulmira Seyilkhanova won first place (8 points), Myakhri Aymakova won second place (7.5 points), and Jennet Yalkanova won third place (7 points).
In the open category, Mergen Kakabayev won first place (7.5 points), Vepaly Khalynyazov won second place (7 points), and Jahan Rejepova won third place (7 points).
Chess in Turkmenistan continues to develop actively, which is confirmed by the growing skill level of the players. New stages of the Grand Prix are expected to be held in Dashoguz, Turkmenbashi and Mary.
