The Washington Post’s (WP) CEO William Lewis has resigned amid widespread layoffs, according to Axios and Politico, citing a letter Lewis addressed to the newspaper’s staff.
Lewis will take over as WP CEO in 2023. In his message to employees, he noted that he was forced to make “difficult decisions” to ensure the newspaper’s “sustainable future.”
Jeff D’Onofrio, who served as The Washington Post’s CFO since 2025, has been appointed interim CEO.
On February 4, WP management notified employees of the start of widespread layoffs due to financial concerns. Editor-in-Chief Matt Murray said that the decision included closing the sports department in its current form.
According to Reuters, the personnel changes were expected to affect all departments. However, the department that produces news on politics and government will remain the core unit.
