Turkmenistan and Iran have reached an agreement on the construction of two new railway lines at the Sarakhs border crossing, as reported by the country’s MIC.
As the head of Iranian Railways Jabbar Ali Zakeri noted after a meeting with the Minister of Railways of Turkmenistan Mammet Akmammedov, this step is aimed at significantly increasing the volume of rail transportation between the countries.
The agreement was concluded as part of bilateral talks that took place in the city of Turkmenbashi during the Third UN Conference on Landlocked Countries. According to the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development of the Islamic Republic of Iran, the project involves the construction of two tracks: one with a standard gauge and the other with a broad gauge, which will connect the Sarakhs stations on both sides of the border.
Jabbar Ali Zakeri emphasized that the expansion of railway infrastructure is of strategic importance for strengthening transport ties in the region. A number of meetings of experts from the railway administrations of both countries will be organized for the practical implementation of these plans.
The Sarakhs border point plays a key role in international transit, being the most important node that connects Iran with Central Asia. It is also part of the international North-South transport corridor.
