The Institute of Seismology and Atmospheric Physics of the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan held a scientific and practical conference dedicated to reducing seismic risk in vulnerable regions of the country. The key issue of the event was the discussion of the draft new law on seismic safety. The Neutral Turkmenistan newspaper reported this.
The strategy is aimed at further increasing the efficiency of relevant fundamental research work in the field of seismic hazard assessment in Turkmenistan.
The new law will define the legal, organizational, economic and social foundations for ensuring seismic safety and will be aimed at preventing the negative impact of possible manifestations of dangerous natural geological and natural-technogenic processes on the life and health of the population of Turkmenistan and the environment.
The conference participants paid special attention to international projects. One of the successful examples of interaction was the modernization of the seismic observation system in Ashgabat with the support of the Japan International Cooperation Agency.
According to the report, the law being developed will become the basis for increasing resilience to natural hazards, providing a comprehensive legal and scientific basis for seismic safety in Turkmenistan.
