UNICEF and the Turkmenistan Tennis Federation (TTF) have launched the country’s first wheelchair tennis program, providing ten children aged 7-18 with physical disabilities access to sports, confidence-building, and social inclusion. The program includes specialized wheelchairs, coaching, and tailored training.
Leveraging UNICEF’s “Sport for Development” approach, the initiative promotes an inclusive environment where children with and without disabilities play together, developing vital life skills. Wheelchair tennis enhances physical well-being, social interaction, and community participation.
“Every child has the right to play, develop their potential, and feel included in their community. This partnership with the Turkmenistan Tennis Federation is a significant step in ensuring that children with disabilities have the same opportunities to participate in sports, build friendships, and increase self-confidence. By investing in inclusive sports, we are not only changing lives but also transforming perceptions and remove social barriers for a more inclusive society,”- said Alexandru Nartea, UNICEF Deputy Representative in Turkmenistan
UNICEF and TTF will train coaches, ensure accessible facilities, and provide equipment. A Children’s Tennis Festival will promote inclusive sports. The program aims to integrate wheelchair tennis into national sports strategies, ensuring long-term opportunities for children with disabilities.
