The United States leads in artificial intelligence (AI), China ranks second, and the UK is third, according to the Global AI Innovation Index report by the China Institute of Scientific and Technological Information and Peking University.
The report was presented at the World Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Shanghai. Its authors examined 46 countries based on five criteria: basic support, resources and development environment, scientific and technological research and development, industry and application of innovation, and international cooperation and exchanges. Countries were analyzed on 39 indicators, each of which was assessed on a three-tier system.
The United States and China lead in AI by a wide margin, according to the report. These countries account for the majority of companies producing AI chips, highly skilled professionals, articles in leading scientific journals, and the majority of large AI models, the researchers say. The United States scored 77.97 points out of 100, China – 58.01, and the United Kingdom – 36.60. The top ten also included Japan (33.77), the Republic of Korea (33.48), Germany (32.22), Singapore (31.57), France (30.98), Canada (29.79), and India (29.41). The World Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Shanghai is taking place this year from July 26 to 28. It has been held annually since 2018.
