The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to former Venezuelan parliamentarian María Corina Machado. The event was broadcast live on the international awards website.
The Nobel Committee explained that she was awarded the prize “for her tireless work to advance the democratic rights of the Venezuelan people and for her struggle for a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.”
Last year, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Nihon Hidankyo, a Japanese organization that unites survivors of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, for “her efforts to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons and for demonstrating that nuclear weapons must never be used again.”
