Flossie, equivalent to 136 human years, holds Guinness World Record after decades of care. According to the US New York Post and others, Flossie, the world’s oldest living cat residing in the UK, celebrated her 30th birthday on December 29 of last year.
Flossie, who has fur mixed with brown and black, was born near Merseyside Hospital in 1995 and is a “street-born” cat. After living as a stray, she was adopted by a hospital employee and stayed with him until the owner passed away 10 years later. She then moved to the owner’s sister’s house and lived there for 14 years.
After the second owner passed away, his son cared for Flossie for three years but decided he was not in a situation to raise a cat and entrusted her to a shelter. It was there that Flossie met her current owner, Vicky Green.
Green said, “I knew from the start that Flossie was a special cat, but I never imagined I would end up living with a world record-holding cat.” She added, “I always wanted to give elderly cats a comfortable retirement,” and “I am proud to have met such an excellent cat through a cat protection organization.”
Although Flossie has age-related conditions such as hearing impairment and vision loss, she is said to still have a lot of playfulness and curiosity. A source from the shelter speculated on the reason for her longevity, stating, “Flossie maintained a consistent routine that included regular meals, sufficient sleep time, and hunting play of appropriate intensity.”
Meanwhile, Flossie was named the world’s oldest living cat in the Guinness World Records in November 2022.
Although no longer alive, the cat that holds the record for the longest-lived cat is “Cream Puff,” owned by Jake Perry. This cat was born on August 3, 1967, in Texas, USA, and lived for 38 years and 3 days until August 6, 2005.
According to the American Animal Hospital Association, one cat year is equivalent to 15 human years, and two cat years are equivalent to 24 human years. After the age of two, four human years are added per cat year. Based on this calculation, Flossie is equivalent to 136 human years old.
