The United Nations in Turkmenistan highlighted a powerful portfolio of joint actions and strategic milestones accomplished during the first half of 2026. Every initiative, community workshop, and high-level agreement rolled out over the last six months was carefully designed with a single, overarching objective: driving the sustainable development of Turkmenistan and directly improving the daily lives of the Turkmen people.
Throughout the first half of the year, the UN and the Government of Turkmenistan actively worked across every major sector to protect environments, build healthier communities, and invest in the next generation. Local specialists and farmers in Lebap province received direct capacity building on sustainable water management, while health professionals in Ashgabat advanced their digital skills in data visualization and artificial intelligence. Regional environmental collaboration took center stage as Turkmenistan joined neighboring countries in Astana to endorse the Regional Green School Platform and actively participated in climate and cryosphere dialogue in both Dushanbe and Samarkand. On the ground, tangible community initiatives came to life, ranging from massive coastal clean-ups along the Caspian Sea coast in Turkmenbashi to interactive climate lessons for children.
Social development and human rights saw landmark advancements, notably through the presidential approval of the new National Action Plan on Gender Equality for 2026–2030 and the launch of projects with the International Labor Organization to promote decent work. The health sector achieved life-changing milestones by successfully expanding domestic access to free, life-saving medications for multiple sclerosis patients, while UNICEF partnered with the national government and the Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov Charity Fund to launch a massive national campaign championing exclusive breastfeeding. Furthermore, the UN and national institutions prioritized public safety and strategic resilience, conducting emergency crisis simulations with the IOM, launching drug-prevention youth weeks with the UNODC, and convening strategic dialogues in Ashgabat to carefully analyze future water availability risks against national food security.
To ensure long-term sustainability, both partners focused heavily on strategic planning and public financing. The UNDP and the Government of Turkmenistan signed a monumental Co-Financing Framework Agreement to fund development initiatives through 2030, while specialized roundtables convened at the UN Building to launch the rollout of Turkmenistan’s Third Voluntary National Review on the Sustainable Development Goals. National and local stakeholders also began actively translating the newly published MICS7 survey data into localized actions to protect families, supported by strategic UNICEF consultations aimed at maximizing public finance investments for children.
This extensive wave of achievements serves as a clear reflection of the deeply rooted, strategic cooperation between the United Nations and the Government of Turkmenistan. Each milestone highlights a relationship built on absolute mutual respect, diplomatic trust, and a shared vision for national prosperity. By seamlessly aligning international expertise with Turkmenistan’s sovereign national development goals, both partners continue to demonstrate an unwavering commitment to leaving no one behind, ensuring a healthier, safer, and more prosperous future for every citizen in the country.
